(The Gate News) People from across the city come together during Van Dyke trial to demand justice in Chicago

Crowds of protesters filled the lawn outside the George A. Leighton Criminal Courthouse on the 2600 block of California Avenue, in anticipation of the jury selection for the murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke. Van Dyke is being tried for six counts of first-degree murder and one count of official misconduct.

McDonald was shot 16 times in the back by police officer Jason Van Dyke making the shots one number short of his then age. He was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai hospital the night of Oct. 20, 2014.

The trial comes just a day after Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced he would not be seeking re-election for mayor of Chicago.
